The reproduced article of the New Times was released one week after the conviction of Debra Milke. The sentence wasn't yet ordered from the judge. When reading this article for the very first time it became apparent to us that it was a cheap approach to expose somebody's privacy in public, to use personal statements in connection with a murder trial and gain sensational interest from their readers. Author Ward Harkavy often put sentences out of the context and used them as headlines. Especially since this website is not too shy to make these early articles available, we ask our readers to think and ask themselves : do the herein stated personal thoughts of Debbie reveal a reasonable background or intention to have Christopher killed, or don't they reveal Debbie's despairing efforts to connect her son with his daddy, Mark Milke and her "hopes, this time things work out for us ?" While taking irksome sentences out of the context, New Times didn't care to use sentences like "Christopher hasn't forgotten you and you need to set good examples for him. I do too." or "I realized how I took Chris away from people who love him and saw how it affected him. I then decided that I will soon be 25 and it's about damn time I grow up and get my shit together." or "How would you feel if your son grew up knowing you can't stay out of trouble and always went to prison ?" These statements would've give the right impression about the personality that Debbie was at that time : a young woman who was desperately trying to be the best mother possible for her little son. |
